When targeting an IPv4-only website, the request routes through a CDN edge server (Cloudflare, Akamai, or Fastly) that performs NAT64 translation. The CDN synthesizes an IPv6 address for the IPv4 destination using DNS64, then translates between protocols. This happens transparently with minimal latency.

DNS64 Synthesis

When our IPv6 gateway queries an IPv4-only domain, the CDN's DNS64 resolver synthesizes an IPv6 address by embedding the IPv4 address within a special IPv6 prefix (typically 64:ff9b::/96). This allows IPv6 clients to address IPv4 servers using IPv6 notation.
